A naming convention for import files

Using a standardised naming convention for import files makes it simple to identify them later on.

The naming convention I use is adapted from Maconomy’s own build file naming convention, which identifies the relation(s) the file applies to – eg LocalSpec3.xlsx contains import data for LocalSpec3List and LocalSpec3Line.

My convention adapts this to include a date, company number, relation name(s), and reason for import – the format being:

yymmdd_company_record_reason

Examples

110824_10_LocalSpec3_DeleteLines
120315_20_TargetGroup_NewJobParam
121106_15_Customer_Additions

If the import is for more than one company, the Company Number is replaced by the range – eg 10-30 – the group reference – eg 2x refers to the group of companies in the twenties range – or the word Global if the file is for a system-wide import.
